"If it smells nice then we have probably had something to do with it!" states Ron Thorne from Quest International. Quest is one of the worlds leading fragrances, flavours and food ingredients companies. At their Ashford site, Flotronic air operated double diaphragm pumps have become their site standard, replacing the older style 'figure of eight' pumps, significantly reducing their maintenance times.
A member of the ICI Group, Quest International -Fragrances division, manufacture a range of fragrances for personal & home care, oral care, cosmetics and fine fragrances. The Flotronic fast maintenance 'One Nut' range of pumps are used at almost every stage of the manufacturing process.
Flotronic 710 Series pumps fulfil a number of duties throughout the plant. These are constructed from 316 stainless steel with virgin PTFE diaphragms, which fully complies with FDA requirements for use in hygienic applications. Size ranges from ½" to 2" with flowrates up to 295 l/min.
Replacing older style pumps, which can take several hours to strip and rebuild because of their multiple bolted construction the Flotronic 'One-Nut' fast strip pumps have saved Quest both time and money.
Commenting, Dave Powis – Maintenance Team Leader, "Because of the 'One-Nut' design we can actually maintain the Flotronic pumps in situ, there is no need to remove them from the pipework. We estimate that it takes ½-¾ hour tops to overhaul the Flotronic pumps, compared to 2-3 hours for the older style, saving us a significant amount of time and hassle. We prefer working on the Flotronic pumps as they have so few parts and are very simple to understand."
In the manufacturing plant, a large number of FPL Chemflo all virgin PTFE pumps are used to pump various media and are ideal in applications where wide variations in temperature are involved. Two HiFlo 710 pumps complete the story, used for tanker loading with finished product for delivery to customers. They are connected to multiple suction lines so that they can transfer product from IBC’s to road tankers with minimal pipework flushing. These 2" pumps can transfer at a rate of 540 l/min, minimising tanker turnaround.
"We prefer the Flotronic pumps" comments Ron Thorne – Project Engineer, "because they have proved very reliable, are so easy to maintain and the service we get from FPL has been excellent. The big advantage to us is the enormous savings in spares and repairs downtime".
